In the new “Mission: Impossible” video, Tom Cruise tries to defy death.

A new behind-the-scenes look at next year’s Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Episode 1 shows cinema’s favorite stuntman attempting an incredible trick: riding a motorcycle off a cliff and immediately into a base jump. “This is the most dangerous thing we’ve ever done,” Tom Cruise says in a video released Monday.

This stunt has been years in the making. Cruise practiced more than 500 skydives and 13,000 motorized crossover jumps to master the stunt for the seventh episode of the spy trailer. The team performed this stunt in 2020 in Norway.

According to the film’s writer and director Christopher McQuarrie, the actor coordinated a “master plan” with experts from various disciplines involved, such as motorcycling and base jumping.

“The only things you want to avoid in a stunt like this are serious injuries or death,” Mission: Impossible base jumping instructor Miles Deutscher tells the camera.

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One hits theaters on July 14, 2023, and stars Cruise as Special Agent Ethan Hunt, Ving Rhames as Agent Luther Stickle, and Simon Pegg as Technician Benji Dunn.
